Smile again following a breakup Your ex as left you and you feel shattered? Do you feel helpless or depressed and believe that you will no longer be able to live without him or her? If you just came out of a relationship, like million of others who have one day been broken up with, you may feel those negative emotions. However, you do not have to feel this way!

In this article you will find nuggets of advice to give you the necessary tools to quickly smile again in the days following a break up and gain valuable insights on how to move forward with fresh perspectives.

Get off the couch and exercise!

In the days following a breakup people often feel the weight of the world on their shoulders and close up. This often results in inaction and creates a spiral of negativity. The first step that you should take is to exercise and to be active in order to smile again following a breakup and to prevent a mental block. You do not have to be all gung ho and prepare for a marathon; all that is needed is 45 minutes to an hour of daily exercise.

If you enjoy running, run; if you prefer to spin, go spinning; if you are out of shape then at least go for a walk. The act of getting off of your couch and exercising will help you start to break out of the negativity, and you will be well on your way towards being at peace, in the right state of mind to smile again following a breakup.

Go out with friends

A breakup can often times lead people to close up to the world and live in a shell. It is extremely important not to fall into self-pity and to over think everything that may have went wrong in your past relationship. At the same time replaying all of the highlight reels and “postcard moments” of your past relationship will not do you any good either. The best way to ensure that your mind does not play such tricks on you is to go out with your friends.

The important touch here is not to go out with friends in order to moan or dwell on the past. Go to a movie, to a restaurant or just for a coffee with people that you trust and that surely will be there for you in difficult times. The tip here is to avoid places that will remind you of your ex or that are associated with moments from your past love life. Furthermore, it is of the utmost importance that you force yourself not to speak of your past relationship, in order to quickly move on and smile again following a breakup.

Going out with friends or a sibling under these conditions will also give you the opportunity to remove yourself from a negative state of mind and enable you to open yourself up to a world of wonderful things that surrounds you and that you may have otherwise missed.

Once a week, do something that you really enjoy!

Another useful action is to do something that you truly enjoy at least once a week. Many people will engage in self-torture following a break up and won’t let themselves be happy, almost as if they were not worthy of enjoying the simple things that they once cherished. Tormenting yourself is one of the least constructive or most counterproductive activities that you can engage in following a break up.

Being happy, and not succumbing to your emotions or feelings that you may have for your ex will not push them away or prevent you from one day winning them back! On the contrary, doing something that you truly enjoy and taking your mind off of your ex-lover will enable you to break away from a feeling of dependence and make you more desirable in their eyes.

So whatever your “thing” maybe whether its salsa dancing, going to a concert or to a sports event, or simply watching a movie or a reality show, take our advice and indulge!

Force yourself to smile; it will reprogram your mind!

Lastly, it is important for you to know that it is possible to self-reprogram your mind to in essence convince yourself to be happy. By setting reminders on your phone or on sticky notes, try to smile or even better to laugh out loud at least 3 times a day for a period of 3 weeks.

You can watch a funny video on Youtube, re-read a joke that makes you crack up, or simply talk to that funny friend that you may have who always finds a way to make you smile. If all else fails, just smile on your own and for no apparent reasons.

Take our word for it; it won’t be long before you will find yourself in a happy place, a pleasant state without even knowing why or how you may be feeling that way. Before you know it, you will smile again following a breakup that you may have thought was insurmountable.
